Darrell E Smokewood's Obituary
WEIR, KS – Darrell E. Smokewood, 92, of Weir, died May 7, 2021 at his home.
He was born December 10, 1928 in Jackson County, Missouri the son of Elmer W. and Georgia E. Murphy Smokewood. He had lived in the Weir area since 1930, moving from Independence, MO. He graduated from Pittsburg State University with a BA in Education.
He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army from July 1946 to November of 1948, with the occupation force in Japan.
He married Margaret M. Simpson on March 20, 1952 in Columbus, KS. She preceded him in death on February 22, 2021.
Mr. Smokewood was a High School Teacher at Weir High School and Southeast High School in Cherokee, KS for 35 years, retiring in 1989.
He was a member of the Methodist Church in Weir, he loved reading, gardening and looking for ancestors.
Survivors include one daughter Cathleen Stahmer and her husband Ken of Augusta, KS, one granddaughter Sara Swift and her husband Tyler of Augusta, KS, several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife one daughter Dr. Elaine Smokewood, step-mother Lavaun Smith Smokewood, three sisters Alpha Waddell, Ann Smokewood and Dorothy Morris.
Graveside services will be 2 pm Thursday, May 13, 2021 at the Lone Elm Cemetery in Cherokee County, KS with Aaron Williams, officiating. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside. Friends may call at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 104 W. Main in Weir, KS from noon to 5 pm Wednesday, May 12, 2021. A memorial has been established to Harry Hynes Hospice and/or Southeast Highschool in Cherokee, KS, In Memory of Darrell these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home.
