Alonzo Theodore "Ted" Hurst's Obituary
Alonzo Theodore “Ted” Hurst, Jr, 96 of Frontenac, KS, died April 1, 2025 at Medicalodge in Frontenac, KS.
He was born May 1, 1928 in Joplin, MO, the son of Alonzo Theodore Hurst, Sr. and Lillian Mae (Fowler) Hurst.
He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.
On June 19, 1949 he was united in marriage to Patsy Rhoades in Wichita, KS; she survives him of the home.
Ted worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for 40 years.
He was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Pittsburg.
Whatever his children became interested in led Ted into helpful activities: Boy Scouts, little league baseball, band boosters, quarterback club and MYF youth at church (which led to mission trips to Appalachia) to home repairs, making the home safer. The BSA, Ted was the troops scoutmaster until his son received his eagle award. Then he started a co-ed high adventure explorer post for 33 years which took them to two different Philmont scout ranch back country trips. Then there were the ski trips, Texas beach trips, whitewater rafting, repelling, and caving experiences. During this same time frame he became a certified ropes course director for 15 years. Ted wanted youth to experience wholesome activities that some would never have again.
Additional survivors include a son: Rick and Cheryl Hurst of Lenexa, KS; a daughter: Tracy and Gary Colcher of Topeka, KS; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Kelcy Hurst and two brothers Ed and Bob Hurst.
Services will be at a later date at the First United Methodist Church in Pittsburg. Burial will be in the Highland Park Cemetery in Pittsburg.
