Susan R.E. Swortwood's Obituary
Susan Rose Elizabeth Swortwood, 85, of Pittsburg, KS passed away at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburg, KS on Friday, September 5, 2025 surrounded by loved ones.
She was born on March 7, 1940 to William Ernest Scofield and Mary Cathryn (Knox) Scofield. She graduated from Bishop Miege High School in Roeland Park, KS in 1958, and was united in marriage to her late husband, Michael Lewis Swortwood in 1960. Susan worked alongside her husband in their businesses for many years. She also loved working as a preschool teacher for 10 years in Olathe, KS and Paola, KS.
Susan was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in both Frontenac, KS and New Smyrna Beach, FL. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who gave generously of herself to all. This also included a multitude of beloved dogs, cats, and horses. She enjoyed playing bridge, reading, and especially enjoyed spending quality time spoiling her grandchildren.
Susan is survived by her children Cathy (Terry) Lucchi of Pittsburg, KS and Michael (Jane) Swortwood of Springfield, MO; her son-in-law Orin (Penny) Tennison of New Smyrna Beach, FL; her siblings, Jim (Carolyn) Scofield of Chula Vista, CA; 2 grandchildren, M.J. (Rachel) Swortwood of Springfield, MO, and McKenzie (Mason) Peck of Springfield, MO; 5 great-grandchildren, Gracie Swortwood, Brody Swortwood, Brooks Swortwood, Bishop Peck, and Everly Peck; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter Teresa Susan Tennison, and her siblings Thomas W. Scofield and John E. Scofield.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Susan on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, KS. She will be buried the following day on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 11:00 a.m. in Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa, KS. The Rosary will be held prior to Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. The family will receive friends for visitation at the church at 9:00 a.m. prior to the Rosary. In lieu of flowers, Masses may be offered in her honor, or memorial contributions may be made to either Sacred Heart School in New Smyrna Beach, FL or Halifax Health Hospice Care Center in Edgewater, FL.
