Larry W. Lucas' Obituary
Larry W. Lucas, 87, of Weir, KS, passed away on October 30, 2025, in Frontenac, KS.
He was born February 21, 1938, in Weir, KS, the son of Laurence and Edna (Mummert) Lucas.
Larry worked in a multitude of disciplines throughout his life. In the early 1960's, Larry was employed by the Boeing Aircraft Company where he worked on the B-52 "Wet-Wing" Modification Program. Many of these aircraft later went on to serve in Vietnam during Operation "Rolling Thunder", "Arc-Light" as well as during the siege at Khe Sanh. Several years later he worked for Helio Aircraft of Pittsburg, KS conducting operational testing of the H-550A “Stallion”. This aircraft was initially built for the US Air Force, carrying a 20mm cannon and designed to land on the extremely short jungle runways of Vietnam. Following his work at Helio, Larry began a 37-year career as a successful building contractor, finally retiring in 2010.
He was of the Catholic faith, and a former member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks Lodge of Pittsburg. He was also a former mayor of Weir, KS.
Larry was married to and later divorced from Marjorie Eichhorn, where they had three sons and two daughters.
He was later married to Virginia Dutton, who preceded him in death on December 23, 2024.
Survivors include his three sons: Bruce (Marsha) Lucas of Prospect, TN; Wayne (Jodi) Lucas of Rogers, AR; Clint Lucas of Pittsburg, and a daughter: Elaine (Matt) Price of Orlando, FL one stepdaughter Kelly (Stephen) Griffith of Wichita, KS, one stepson Kyle (Jana) Dutton of Lenexa, KS. He also leaves behind a sister, Linda Berning of Frontenac, 16 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, and 6 step-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, a daughter Joanna Holmes, a son-in-law John Holmes, a stepdaughter Monica Dutton Hurt, a stepson Tyler Dutton and a brother Jim Lucas.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS. Condolences may be left at www.bathnaylor.com. Services and arrangements are under the care of Bath-Naylor Funeral Home of Pittsburg.
