I have many lovely memories of my dear Uncle Joe. One of the oldest goes back to 1948. My family typically spent holidays at the Wachter home; Joe was still living with his parents then. He loved to play tricks on my sister Mary Jo and me. That particular Easter I had just seen the marvelous musical EASTER PARADE. Joe told me that he had written the theme song, which thrilled me. I couldn't wait to return to Wichita to tell all my friends about my famous uncle. The day following my announcement, a girl in my class asked me what my uncle's name was. When I proudly replied, "Joe Wachter," she said "My dad said if his name isn't Irving Berlin, you're a liar!"
