John Gross' Obituary
SCAMMON – John Gross, 105, of Scammon, died quietly in his sleep on October 16, 2016 at Via Christi Village in Pittsburg, Kansas.
He was born on May 16, 1911 in West Mineral, Kansas on the family farm the son of Ignace and Rose Ziegler Gross. He graduated from West Mineral High School in 1928.
He married Edna Herlocker on May 18, 1937 and she preceded him in death on October 10, 1979.
He worked on the family farm, then in the coal mines for the P&M Coal Company, later at Spencer Chemical and Gulf Oil Company in Cherokee County, KS, before retiring early to care for his ailing loving wife.
John was raised Catholic and made a profound stand against abortion. He was a member of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Scammon, KS, and the Knights of Columbus in Scammon.
Survivors include one son Robert Gross of Quartzsite, AZ, two daughters Ina Rae Yoder of Tulsa, OK and Arlene Henderson of Decatur, Alabama and one sister Mary Perello of Frontenac, and many many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Everyone had a very close relationship with grandpa. They knew the greatness of this remarkable man.
He was preceded in death by a sister Rosie Gross and brothers Joe, Frank, Ignace and Mike Gross.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 am Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Scammon, KS with Father Chrysostom Ah Maung, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bridget’s Catholic Cemetery in Scammon, KS. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 pm Monday, October 24, 2016 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Weir, KS.
