Frank Vincent Montemurro's Obituary
Frank Vincent Montemurro was born in his family home during a blizzard at Capaldo, Kansas on February 6, 1925, to Rosa (Benso) and Vincenzo Montemurro. He departed this life at home on August 11, 2024, just 6 months short of his 100th birthday.
Frank was a graduate of St. Mary’s high school in Pittsburg, Kansas. In 1943, Frank joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific theatre aboard the U.S.S. Hilbert (DE-742) until the end of the war. He was on the Hilbert for several campaigns including the Battle of the Philippine Sea and Iwo Jima. After the war, Frank returned to Pittsburg and attended Kansas State Teachers College of Pittsburg (Pittsburg State University) obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. After graduation Frank went to work for Pittsburg Ready Mix Concrete and he worked there for over 50 years, taking ownership of the company in the 1970s. While studying at PSU, Frank met the love of his life Shirley Hofer. They were married on June 3, 1950, at St. Alice Catholic Church in Capaldo, KS. They had three children Marilyn, Tom, and Dan, and were married for 63 years until her death in 2013. Frank and Shirley loved to travel, with favorite locations being Las Vegas and Hawaii. Frank was a member of the Pittsburg American Legion Post 64.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Shirley and son Tom and two sisters, Angeline Calhoon and Mary Neptune . Survivors include daughter Marilyn (Mike) Nelson of Gunter, TX, Dan Montemurro of Pittsburg, KS; grandchildren David (Emily) Nelson, Kelly (Amy) Nelson, Kimberly (Russ) Kimbrough, Andy (Faith) Montemurro, Bryan Montemurro, and Bethany (Jake) Lowry, along with eleven great grandchildren.
Rosary will be recited at 6 pm on Thursday, August 15, 2024 at the Bath- Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg. The family will receive friends after the Rosary until 7:30 pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 AM Friday August 16, 2024 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Fr. Mike Simone as Celebrant. Burial will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery.
