Donald Earl Scales' Obituary
Donald Earl Scales 81, of Girard, KS died 12:10am Sunday February 18, 2024 at the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, MO following a long battle with cancer.
Donald was born February 12, 1943 in Crawford County, KS to Glen Wilford and Julia Faye (McColm) Scales. Don has lived in this area most all his life. Donald graduated from Cherokee High School in 1961 and later joined the United States Army Reserves, serving from October of 1963 to October of 1969. On January 30, 1965 Donald married Linda Lee Clugston in Crawford County, KS; she survives at the home in Girard, KS. Donald worked as a Coal Miner for 23 years for Mine 19 Big Brutus and LaCygne KS. He and his wife Linda later owned and operated J and W Poultry Girard, KS.
Donald was of the Christian Faith; he was a member of the SNPJ and President for 10 years; American Legion Cherokee, KS; American Legion Girard, KS; a Mirza Temple Shriner; Masonic Lodge member; ELKS Club 412; ER 2 years; Lifetime Member Big Brutus Inc.; Cherokee Gun Club; Tank Pond Member and a member of the West Mineral Eagles.
Survivors include his wife Linda; children Glen W. Scales and wife Sherry of Allen, TX and Donna L. Platt and husband Steven of Butler, MO; brother Melvin Scales and wife Mary Jo of Pittsburg, KS; grandchildren Jenny Jo Burdine, Kaleb Platt, Breanna Jones and Tessa Webb; 10 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, brother Maurice Glen Scales and sister Judy Scales.
Funeral Services will be 1:00pm Wednesday February 21, 2024 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS with Pastor Duane Elmore officiating. Burial will follow at the Monmouth Cemetery in Rural Crawford County, KS. Family will receive friends from 12-1:00pm prior to the service at the funeral home; friends may call after 10:00am Wednesday. In lieu of flowers the family asks expressions of sympathy to be in the form of memorials to the SNPJ Scholarship Fund and/or Girard American Legion Post 26 Building Fund.
