Catherine A. Kinkaid's Obituary
Catherine “Cathy” Ann Kinkaid, age 65, of Pittsburg, Kansas, passed into eternal rest on Friday, January 23, 2026, from complications due to a sudden stroke at KU Med Center in Kansas City, Kansas.
Cathy was born in Springfield, Missouri, on October 17, 1960, to Sharon (Flynn) and Thomas Leftwich. While she spent much of her childhood in both Southeast Kansas and Wisconsin, her hometown was Girard, Kansas. In her teens, she was active in the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls and was instituted as Worthy Advisor. During her high school years, she had many interests, including serving as editor of her high school yearbook, participating in band, and spending time with her many friends, whom she remained close to throughout her life. She graduated from Girard High School in May 1978.
Just prior to her graduation, she married Robert “Bob” Mogle of Columbus, Kansas, in April 1978. During their marriage, they had two children: Jessica (Mogle) Schieber, currently of Peoria, Arizona, and Jonathan Mogle of Johnstown, Colorado. Cathy worked in the office of her father’s appliance store, as well as taking on many other accounting and office management roles in her early career. While working full-time and raising her children, she decided to return to school to pursue a degree in accounting. She graduated summa cum laude from Labette Community College in 1991 with an associate’s degree in accounting. Cathy and Bob divorced in 2002.
Over the course of her career, the roles she found most rewarding were those that allowed her to support adults with disabilities. She worked for many years with Class LTD of Columbus, as well as Haven Support of Pittsburg, where she used her knowledge of funding and disability support to advocate for the needs of her clients. In 2014, she married Denis Kinkaid of Wichita; they later divorced in 2016.
Cathy was nothing if not spirited and opinionated! She had a wide variety of interests throughout her life. She loved the Kansas City Chiefs, often taking her family to Wisconsin to attend Chiefs training camp, and she rarely missed watching a game on Sundays. Her interests included hunting and competition shooting, fishing, motorcycles, traveling within the United States, golfing, floral decoration, cooking for friends and family, and sewing. She was a fantastic cook who frequently prepared meals for those she loved or those in need. Her love of sewing ranged from creating her own clothing to craft projects and quilting, and she especially enjoyed making personalized quilts for others. She loved quilting with her daughter and crocheting with her mother.
Celebrating the Cherokee Nation, Cathy created a mixed-media quilt for a Quilting Arts magazine competition depicting the Trail of Tears, which won and was published. She also created quilts for Quilts of Valor, honoring veterans with specially designed pieces. As the child of two United States Marine Corps veterans, Cathy had a deep love of country and great respect for those who have served. She became especially active in local Crawford County government and politics through both citizen groups and the Crawford County Republicans.
Cathy was preceded in death by her father, Thomas A. Leftwich, and is survived by many who loved her dearly whose pictures you could find on every wall of her home. Survivors include her mother, Sharon Fisher of Girard; sister, Carolyn Zagonel of Girard; half-brother, Tommy Leftwich of Pittsburg; and stepsisters, Lee Ann Giffin of Joplin and Marjorie Giffin of Pittsburg. She is also survived by her children and grandchildren: daughter Jessica Schieber and partner Josh Bishop of Peoria, Arizona, and her children Micah, Karter, and Silas Schieber and Carter Bishop; son Jon Mogle and his wife, Hannah, of Johnstown, Colorado, and their children Hudson and Birdie Mogle and Elijah Mogle of Columbus, Kansas.
Cathy was taken too soon and will be deeply missed. A celebration of life will be announced later this summer to allow all who loved her the opportunity to gather and honor her memory.
