My Aunt Barbara—‘Aunt Barbie Doll,’ as she loved us to call her—was truly one of a kind, a woman whose presence could light up any room the moment she walked in. She was bubbly, outgoing, and full of life, and she had a way of speaking that made everything sound beautiful. The simplest things became exquisite when she described them. She could make anything sound elegant, delicious, and special, as if life itself was something to be savored and admired.
Growing up, some of my favorite memories are of her coming over at the start of the school year. Early in the morning, when we didn’t want to wake up, she would gently pull us out of bed by singing “School days, school days…” in her cheerful, loving voice. No matter how tired or grumpy we were, the moment we realized it was her, we couldn’t help but smile. She had that kind of magic about her—she could turn even the most ordinary or unwanted moments into something warm and joyful.
She also gave us little memories that still make us laugh today. Whenever we’d drive down the road and catch the smell of a skunk, we’d always say, “Barbara’s been on this road,” remembering the time she hit a skunk years ago. It became our little saying—one of those small, funny things that now means so much more.
Barbara carried herself with such style and grace. She always looked beautiful—her outfits, her jewelry, her makeup, her hair—everything was flawless. She had a presence that made her seem glamorous and full of life, and while she did enjoy nice things, what stood out most was her kindness. She was as sweet as they come, with a heart that matched her bright spirit.
She was my mom’s twin, and that bond made her even more special to all of us. And though she didn’t have children of her own, I truly believe she would have been an incredible mother. She had so much love, joy, and warmth to give.
I will always love her deeply and carry her memory with me—in the songs, in the laughter, and even in those unexpected moments on the road. She made life feel brighter, more beautiful, and more full of love, and that is how I will always remember her.
Always in my heart!
Your niece,
