July 7, 1951 - January 31, 2021
Thomas Allen Duran, 69, of Pittsburg, KS went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Jan. 31, 2021 after a long, courageous battle with Covid Pneumonia. He was born to Philip and Frances Duran in Gunnison, Colorado. They preceded him in death. He graduated from Gunnison High School and went on to earn his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Pittsburg State University. He was a Professor of Communication at Labette Community College for 20 years. He truly found his passion in teaching and loved his students and coworkers. Another passion of Tom's was his relationship with Christ and 26 year involvement with his home church, Lighthouse Tabernacle. He was a member of the worship team, playing guitar while his wife, Marsha, played the piano and was the savvy tech guy. He was also an Elder in the church and loved teaching and sharing the Gospel. He was married to his wife, Marsha, for over 40 years. He loved traveling back to Gunnison, Colorado with her and their family, where they would visit family and friends and fish for trout in the rivers in his hometown. He loved playing the guitar and almost always had one in his hands. He also enjoyed golfing, drawing and woodworking, but what he enjoyed the most was spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. He always had projects going with them and was so proud of them. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1971-1975 and later in the Army Reserves and Air National Guard from 1989-1997. He was a proud veteran of the Vietnam War and the Gulf War. He is survived by his wife of the home, daughters Candice Duran Shepherd and Katie Duran of Pittsburg, KS; granddaughter Caedence Shepherd and grandson Zachary Thomas Shepherd, whom he shared his birthday with; sisters Joyce Sanchez, Darla Duran, Judy Cabral (Poncho), Teri Caldera (Miguel), Cathy Mendez (Steven Espinoza) and Anita Espinoza; brother Kenny Duran; step-parents John Espinoza and Mary Duran; Brother-In-Law Tim Hunt (JoyLynn); Sister-In-Law Mary Hunt-Hansen; and many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 6th, 2021, at 11:00am at Lighthouse Tabernacle, 604 S. 200th in Pittsburg, KS. Masks will be required. The service will also be live-streamed on the Lighthouse Tabernacle Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, memorials for the grandchildren's education may be sent to Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 522 S. Broadway, Pittsburg, KS 66762.
