Orval M. Smith

June 30, 1931 - November 19, 2021

Orval M. Smith, 90 of rural Cherokee, KS died Friday, November 19, 2021 at Labette Health in Parsons, KS. He was born June 30, 1931 in Cherokee County, KS the son of Alva F. and Addie Jane (Brenner) Smith. On January 21, 1955 he was united in marriage to Betty Lou Yagher at the Columbus Methodist Church, she survives him at the home. Orval farmed his entire life in Cherokee County until failing health compelled him to retire. He graduated from West Mineral High school in 1949 and was a longtime member of the West Mineral Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons: Al Dean Smith and wife Karen, Phil M. Smith and wife Kelley; two sisters: Lela Grant and husband Jack, & Alice Mussa; three grandchildren: Nick Smith and wife Emily, Sarah Fast and husband Chad, Jason Smith and wife Ashley; six great-grandchildren: Collin, Alexandria, Hayden, Lincoln, Alexa and Blake; along with a brother-in-law Charles Yagher and wife Susan and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson Alex, and brother-in-law Joe Mussa. Private graveside services were Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at the Park Cemetery in Columbus with Pastor Ronald Johnson officiating. Memorials may be made to the West Mineral Methodist Church; these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home. Condolences may be left at www.bathnaylor.com. Services were under the direction of the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home of Columbus.
