Obituaries
Hubert E. “Gene” Walker, 77 of Scammon, KS died at 4:30 a.m. Sunday
March 7, 2010 at the Medicalodge Nursing Home in Columbus.
He was born May 22, 1932 in Columbus, KS the son of Patrick and
Aileen (Mouton) Walker. After his father’s death Gene was raised by his
mother and step-father Harvey “Bud” Bailey.
Gene attended Scammon Elementary School and was a 1946 graduate
of Mineral High School.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving his country in the United
States Army from November 1952 until November 1954. He was affiliated
with the 27th regiment/ 25th division “Wolf Hounds”.
Gene married Barbara Ann Parker on May 24, 1956 in Miami, OK; she
preceded him in death on December 20, 2006.
He was an ironworker working at and constructing several structures and
dams throughout the country some of which include the Oolagah Dam,
Stockton Dam, Ft. Randall Dam in South Dakota and Awahee Dam also
in South Dakota. Gene also worked for BF Goodrich as a mechanic for
nearly 20 years retiring in 1984.
Gene was a member of the Sacred Heath Catholic Church-Frontenac.
He had served on the board at the Family Life Center in Riverton and sat
on the Mt Carmel Home Health Board.
Survivors include 2 sons Mark Walker and wife Darlene of Rogersville,
MO, David Walker of Scammon; a daughter Mary Jo Newcomb and
husband Terry of Scammon; son-in-law Pete Lanning of Pittsburg; a
brother Herb Walker of Scammon and 2 Grandsons Ty Walker and Jesse
Newcomb. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Barbara and a
daughter Sherry Lanning in 2008.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday March 10, 2010
at the St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Scammon with Father Thomas
Stroot as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Hosey Hill Cemetery where
the Ft. Riley Funeral Honors Detail Team will provide full military honors.
The parish rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Bath-Naylor
Funeral Home in Weir where the family will receive friends following the
rosary until 8 p.m. Friends may call t the funeral home after noon on
