Obituaries
      Charles Arthur “Art” Thomas, 95 of Weir, KS, died at 4:15 p.m.
Sunday December 11, 2011 at the Via Christi Village in Pittsburg.
      He was born December 5, 1916 in Cherokee County, KS the son of
Alfred and Bertha (Hughes) Thomas.
      Art served his county in the United States Army as part of the
1264th Combat Engineers in the European Theater during WWII from
March 1944 to April 1946.
      He married Gloria Gaston on June 9th 1940 at her family home;
she survives at Via Christi Village.
      Art farmed but also worked as a pipe fitter in the shops for Kansas
City Southern Railroad for 15 years and worked for W.S. Dickey Clay
Company in Pittsburg retiring in 1979.
      He was a 61 year member of the Benjamin Full American Post #64
in Pittsburg.  He and Gloria enjoyed traveling in their RV and were
members of the Pittsburg/ Baxter Springs RV Club.
      Survivors include his wife Gloria of Via Christi Village, a son Phillip
Thomas and wife Pamela of Pittsburg; a granddaughter Melissa
Whitmer and husband Adam of Broomfield, CO and 2 great-
grandchildren Lauren and Lane Whitmer.  He was preceded in death by
his parents, a brother Claude Thomas a Sister Trella Feist and a son
Gary Wayne Thomas.
      Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday December 14, 2011 at
the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg with Vivian Davidson and
Gerald Holden officiating.  A private family burial will take place later in
the day at the Crocker Cemetery southeast of Pittsburg.  The family will
receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time on Wednesday.  The
Benjamin Fuller American Legion Post #64 will provide flag folding and
presentation ceremonies at the funeral home immediately following the
