History of Highland Park Cemetery, Pittsburg, KS

The Highland Park Cemetery Association, Pittsburg, Kansas, is a not for profit perpetual care cemetery corporation and was established in 1914. The current President and Treasurer is Joe Naylor and the Vice-president and Secretary is Sally Naylor. The cemetery superintendent is Harold Napier. Mr. Napier lives on the grounds and has been associated with the cemetery for over 19 years. The cemetery sits on 36 acres of land at the corner of Broadway and Centennial in Pittsburg. Highland Park is the successor of the old Pittsburg Cemetery also known as the Hobson Cemetery. The Hobson Cemetery is now part of Highland Park and is in the northwest section on Broadway. The oldest recorded burial in the cemetery is August 1, 1872. Highland Park Cemetery has over 15,000 burials, including many founders of the city government, local business and institutions. It is estimated that only half of the land in Highland Park Cemetery has been used and there is enough land to serve the needs of Pittsburg and surrounding communities for over 150 years
