Obituaries
Mary Frances Duffin of rural Weir passed away on Wednesday, July 13,
2011 in Columbus, KS.  

Mary Frances Meyer was born on June 2, 1931 in Fort  Scott, KS to
Herman and Rose(Fox) Meyer.  She graduated from St. Mary’s High
School in 1949, and upon graduation entered Mt. Carmel School of
Nursing.  She worked as a registered nurse in Pitcher, OK and
Leavenworth, KS where she met Robert Leo Duffin.  They were married
at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church on June 2, 1954.  She and Bob had
3daughters in Leavenworth, where Bob farmed with his father.  In 1960
they moved to rural Weir, KS where Bob farmed with her father.  They
had 4 more children after moving to SE Kansas.  She was a farm wife
and mother to their 7 children.

On September 26, 1964, Bob passed away. Mary Frances went to work
at Maude Norton Hospital in Columbus where she worked until her
retirement in 1994.  She was also involved in her family’s farming
operation.

Mary Frances was a member of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church her entire
life, where she was involved in the Alter Society.  She also served as a
CYO youth advisor for many years.  She was an avid supporter of the
county 4-H program, and served in various capacities including club and
project leader.   The fair was the highlight of her summer.  Her greatest
enjoyment was spending time with her family. She loved family “get-
togethers”, and instilled a sense of family unity and loyalty by organizing
family dinners and reunions.  She also loved to travel with her children
and grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons and their spouses, Bob and Kelly Duffin of
Weir, and Gary and Martha Duffin of Kansas City, MO; 5 daughters and
their spouses, Mary Pat and Bob Burgan and Rosalie and John Lopp,
both of Columbus, Cathy and Jay Albright of Stillwater, OK, Theresa and
Jimmy Johnson of Durham, NC and Becky and Kenny Martin of
Cherokee, 3 brothers and a sister, 18 grandchildren,2 step
grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.  

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and
a sister.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 am, Monday, July 18, 2011 at the St.
Bridget’s Catholic Church in Scammon, KS with Fr. Chrysostom Ah
Maung as Celebrant.  Burial will follow in the St. Bridget’s Cemetery.  
Family will receive friends at the church in Scammon from 6 pm,Sunday,
July 17 until the rosary begins at 7pm.   Condolences may be left at www.

to St. Bridget’s Catholic Church, Pittsburg State University Foundation or
Cherokee Co. 4-H Foundation; these may be left at or mailed to the
