Obituaries

WEIR — Dr. Robert Dale “Doc” Brown, 83 of Weir, KS died at 9:27 p.m.,
Friday, November 20, 2009 at McCune Brooks Hospital in Carthage, MO.
Doc was born March 10, 1926 in Pittsburg, KS to Dewey R. and Lavone
A. (Ferguson) Brown. He attended schools in Webb City graduating with
the class of 1943. He went on to University of Missouri from 1948-1954
graduating with his B.S. degree as a Veterinarian.
Doc served his country in the United States Navy as a flagman. While
serving he received the Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on
August 16, 1946 as a Signalman Third Class.
On October 18, 1944, in Columbus, Ks he married Blanche L. Ervin. She
preceded him in death on October 26, 1978.
Doc was a veterinarian for a few years in St. Joseph, MO. He worked as a
federal meat and poultry inspector for Hull & Dillon Meats in Pittsburg and
then the SW Missouri area for many years.
Doc was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Weir and was a longtime
member of the American Legion of Weir, KS. Doc was an avid Tri-State
Swingles Square Dance Club member.
Survivors include his sons Robert D. Brown, Jr. and his wife Linda of
Hutchinson, KS and Richard E. Brown and wife Patty of Partridge, KS;
daughters Peggy Buchanan and husband Gary of Eudora, KS, Barbara
J. Kirk of rural Weir, KS and Anita Robinson and husband Steve of
Columbus, KS; 7 grandchildren Susanne Mahoney and husband Joe,
Jade Brown and wife Heather, Nate Kirk and wife Kayla, Rob Brown, Jaci
Burns and husband Brad, Joah Gordon and husband Ryan, and Chelsey
Gatewood and husband Brett; along with 5 great-grandchildren Claire
Mahoney, Alex and Milo Brown, Brodrick Burns and Tatum Kirk.
Doc was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law Norma Brown.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at
Blackjack Cemetery in Missouri with Minister Brad Burns officiating, where
military rites will be given by the United State Naval Funeral Honors Detail
Team. Family and friends are requested to meet at the cemetery on
Wednesday. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. on Tuesday,
November 24 at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 104 W. Main St., Weir, KS.
The family suggests expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials
to the SEK Humane Society, Memorials may be left at or mailed to Bath-
Naylor Funeral Home of Weir, KS.
